About Seoul

NTHAS 13_Seoul illustrate.png

Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, had also been the capital of Baekje and Joseon.

The city has been known by several different names, such as Wiryeseong, Hansan, Hanseong, Hanyang, Yangju, Namgyeong and Gyeongseong.

As shown by the prehistoric dwellings in the Amsa-song site, Seoul began to be inhabited

by human beings in the Neolithic period. It has since then been one of the Korea’s principal

administrative centers for about two thousand years from the Three Kingdoms period

to the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Here, the history of Seoul is divided into a detailed chronology

of ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary periods.
